The amazing life’s journey of Dr. Asoke Kumar Ghosh suddenly ended on June 12, 2025 and he was not ready to go.
Asoke is irreplaceable and he leaves behind his deeply grieving daughter Tanima (Riley and Kelly), sons Emon and Sumonto (Courtney), who will miss Bapi everyday. Bapi’s spirit lives on in his talented grandchildren Aidan, Nikki, Leah, Ela and Quinn.
Asoke was born in Dacca, India in 1938 on Kaet Tooley Road, the 5th of 7 children of Fanindra Mohan Ghosh and mother Nirmala Roy. His siblings were Arathi, Anjali, Archana, Anil and Arun. His paternal grandfather Rai Bahadur Ishwar Chandra Ghosh was knighted by Lord Viceroy Minto.
Asoke survived WWII bombings by Japan, the 1946 famine by eating sweet potatoes, the 1947 partition of India by fleeing to Calcutta- losing all their possessions, pet dog & their family home. As a young boy he went to a Jesuit school and was the top student in all his classes. He was an athletic soccer and cricket player. The partition rendered his family poor so they grew up sharing one room and he cherished his few books like gold.
In 1956, Asoke met his future wife Chandralekha. In that same year, the brilliant Asoke completed his Bachelor’s in Honors Physics, followed by a double Major in Radiophysics and Electronics from Calcutta University. He loved being a senior lecturer at N.Bengal U and completed his PhD from Jadavpur University. He was a brilliant researcher and left India to pursue a once-in-a-lifetime research scholarship with Professor John D. Craggs and his prestigious team in Liverpool, UK in 1963.
In 1964, Asoke married his childhood sweetheart Chandralekha Maulik on Sept. 24, selecting Montreal to build their remarkable life together. He was a rocket scientist, working at RCA Research laboratories and then co-founded MPB Technologies in 1976. As the pipe-smoking Director of Space, Photonics and Special Projects at MPB, he built brilliant teams, and enriched the lives of so many budding scientists, engineers and technicians by spearheading multiple innovations for space shuttle, defence and nuclear fusion programs. In parallel, he authored numerous patents in lasers and photonics as well as shared his wisdom through scientific missions and global symposia/ workshops.
It is such a dark day for the community. While he excelled academically, Asoke was also a tour de force in trivial pursuit and chess; he collected stamps and coins; he played the flute and tabla; he listened to Hemanta Mukherjee and he was an unparalleled partner in bridge and “hearts”. He recited Tagore and Tennyson’s poetry, read textbooks & recalculated theorems, recounted Stanley cup MVPs, and final tennis match scores. He also improved the lives of so many kids as a “Bagheera” boyscouts leader. He loved books, watching long cricket and soccer matches; and he successfully coached his kids to soccer & baseball championships. He is now drinking a cup of tea with his beloved Chandralekha who died in 2011.
What an amazing life’s journey. He debated, settled differences and stood against all forms of racism.
Please join Asoke’s family and friends in Montreal at Rideau Funeral Home, 4275 Sources Blvd, DDO, H9B 2A6 on Sunday JULY 13, 2025 at 1 pm EST - for a celebration of Asoke’s fantastic voyage - for a final debate on “quarks, bombs and bongos” and to say good-bye to this brilliant, funny, loyal, sweet man; who we will remember forever.
