Our dearest Bapi (Dadu) passed away peacefully at Lakeshore General Hospital surrounded by his beloved family. He is survived by his wife Malaya, son Joy, daughter Runa, daughter-in-law Danielle, son-in-law Krish and grandchildren Jasmine, Saige and Kiran.

We are confident that he is having a party with his friends and family in the afterlife. He lived for a good celebration!

Bapi would proudly tell you how he left India in his early twenties and set sail for post-war Germany. He arrived in a foreign country without knowing how to speak the language, make a meal or even a cup of tea. He thrived because of his charisma. He was the life of the party and could get anyone on the dance floor.

In the late 60’s, Bapi settled in Montreal, Canada. He returned to India to marry Malaya in 1971 and began building a family. Unfortunately, in 1979, Bapi suffered a massive stroke. He persevered for more than 5 years to relearn basic skills including the name of his children and the alphabet. Malaya stayed by Bapi’s side for the rest of his life. She made innumerable sacrifices and worked hard to raise their children.

One of his many passions included making sweets and gourmet meals for special occasions, often boasting how he can out-do the fanciest restaurants. All his skills including culinary were self-taught. Tending to his flowers and sharing tomatoes, zucchini, and huge squash gave Bapi great joy.

Since a young age, Bapi had a taste for adventure and travelling the world. Despite incredible odds, Bapi had a fire in his spirit. His personality has influenced who we are today.

You will always have a seat at our table. We will miss your mischievous smile, your roaring laughter and your delicious sweets. Bapi would insist that we all share a meal and have a laugh, as being together made him the happiest. Celebrating New Year’s Eve with his family was a favorite tradition. His grandson Kiran wants us to remember that he was a joyful person all his life.

We are deeply grateful to the ICU team at the Lakeshore General Hospital. They treated us with empathy, and we are sincerely thankful.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Douglas Mental Health University Institute would be appreciated. Bapi shared his life with us and we are enriched to be a part of his legacy.
