Bernard David Young, beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully at the age of 88 after a brief illness. He left this world having built a legacy of kindness, strength, and devotion that will continue to guide all who knew him.
Born on September 29, 1937, in Montreal, Bernard grew up with a deep appreciation for hard work, integrity, and family which are all values he carried throughout his life. He spent many years working in printing and dedicated over 50 years to amateur football in Quebec and Canada. This led him to working in professional football, both in university and the CFL where he was known for his dedication, fairness, and unwavering commitment to doing things the right way. During this time, he was awarded and is now a two-time member of the CFL Hall of Fame.
Family was the heart of Bernard’s life. A devoted and loving husband to his wife of 63 years, Elaine (Girouard). He was a proud father to Louise (Doug Dobby), Brent (Tanya Knights), Scott (Sharon Cannon) and Lori (Dino Larouche) and a cherished grandfather to Courtney, Kaitlin (Kirk), Michael, Erica, Cynthia, Kelly, Chelsea (Anthony), Morgan (Mike), Olivia and Maya and great-grandfather to Scotlyn, Berkeley, Whistler and Canyon.
He is survived by his brothers, Kevin (Donna), Richard (Frances), Mark (preceded) and Josée.
His laughter, wisdom, and corny jokes filled every gathering, and his presence will be deeply missed around the table, at holidays, and in the quiet moments in between.
Bernard was a man of simple joys — whether tending to his garden, reading the paper, playing scrabble or poker, watching his favorite team, or sharing stories from “the old days.”
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Oncology Department at St-Mary’s Hospital.
Forever in our hearts, Mr. Christmas!
