After a long and happy life, we say goodbye to Charles “Charlie” Bryan at the great age of 93. He passed peacefully at The Lakeshore General on Saturday 21st April 22. Beloved husband to Drusilla Bryan for 66 years, Dad to Fiona and Sheila and Poppa to Cameron and Skye.

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, a professional Civil Engineer, he set sail in 1954 for Montreal with £5 in his pocket and a job interview. He returned to Glasgow, having secured the job, to marry his love and friend and they celebrated their honeymoon crossing the Atlantic for a new start. They settled a couple of years later in the new community of Roxboro and he transformed their new home into an extraordinary and unique family house.

Charles travelled extensively with his work and Drusilla often accompanied him and together they shared many happy memories. Charles’ accomplishments were many both professionally and personally. He always had many projects on the go at the same time including renovating sail boats, sports cars, and camper vans. He had a constant quench for knowledge, in particular British History and could deliver the succession of Kings and Queens names and dates of reign from the 10th century onwards. He wrote three books on another of his favourite subjects the Scottish language and the poet, Robert Burns. He could recite the entire poem of “Address to the Haggis” by Robbie Burns by heart and was often invited to be the Guest of Honour at a Burns Night celebration to deliver this in full Scottish kilt attire. It was spectacular.

In his later years he will be particularly remember in the Roxboro neighbourhood for his cheerful waves and smiles with anyone who passed the house, and as “the gentleman who walked the little white dog around the block every day.”

A celebration of his accomplished and interesting life will be held at The Rideau Memorial Garden and Funeral on Saturday 14th May from 11am – 1pm.

The family would appreciate in lieu of flowers a donation to the St Andrews’s Presbyterian Homes Foundation (https://standrewspresbyterianhomes.org/donate)
