Charles Gilbert Dodge (Gil)
1929-2020
Peacefully on April 25, after a long, calm and determined encounter with cancer. Cherished husband of Anne (nee Mathewson) for 64 years. Devoted father to Peter (Kim), Julia, Steve (Megan), John (Sophie), and Maggie (Shawn). Loved and remembered by 12 grandchildren (Kelsey, Neal, TC, Amanda, Celia, Lorna, Andrew, Annette, Joel, Jason, Kevin, Aveline), and 4 great-grandchildren (Jack, Callan, Rowan, Lyra). Predeceased by Sister Ruth Ogden. Lovingly remembered by Sister Nancy Janes (of Moncton, NB), and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Gil was born in Moncton, NB on Nov. 28, 1929 to parents Charlie and Ella (nee Good). Valedictorian at Moncton High School in 1947 facilitated Gil’s entrance to Mount Allison University from which he graduated with his B.FA in 1955, interrupted and supported by the ROTP with a Lieutenant’s commission serving at CFBs Gagetown and Petawawa during the Korean War.
Upon graduation, Gil quickly joined Anne in London, England, where they were married in Paddington on Dec. 6, 1956. Many adventures and fond memories were made as the two fledgling artists backpacked, cycled, drank wine, smoked Gitanes, made dear friends, and toured Europe before their return to Canada, where they settled in Anne’s stomping grounds of Montreal, Que. to begin their family, and eventually settling in the West Island community of Baie D’Urfe.
During his long and full career teaching Fine Arts, History, and English at Macdonald High School in Ste. Anne de Bellevue, Gil could be seen walking to work almost every day for decades, regardless the weather. In the summers at the Baie D’Urfe swimming pool, stopwatch in hand, Gil could also be seen cheering on and timing his and others’ children at innumerable swim meets.
He and Anne, with likeminded friends, founded the Baie D’Urfe Little Theatre troupe, where he built props, painted sets, wrote hilarious lyrics, and otherwise participated in many a musical or Christmas pantomime. His role as pirate Baba au Rum provided entertaining and nostalgic laughter for years.
When not at the pool with their children, Gil & Anne shared their love of nature. Summers with the young family always included weeks of travel to forests, bodies of water, and tenting in various campgrounds in the mountains to experience life from a simpler perspective. Seeing first the red VW bus, and then the school-bus yellow van packed to the rafters with kids, the dog, and camping equipment meant the Dodges were hitting the road.
Gil had a deep love and appreciation for choral singing and performed with several local choirs over the years including the Welsh Male Choir and Octet, Harmonia, Spectrum, and Melodia. Music and singing filled the house on Somerset Road. His close friend, Cy Daly, provided much appreciated comradery and support to Gil, especially in his later years.
Gil also put time and considered effort into his own desire to paint, providing many family members with portraits and landscapes to treasure.
Gil and Anne moved to the Manoir Baie D’Urfe in early 2019, and the family thanks them for their kind and compassionate care.
Arrangements by Rideau Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home. Cremation has taken place. As requested, there will be no service.
Donations in memoriam may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
