<div itemprop="description">It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Avtar Pall on February 6, 2021. Avtar passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side. Avtar will be missed by his wife, Tripat; his children Rashmi (Satish), Harpreet (Parul); and his grandchildren Aanya and Rohan as well as many relatives and friends. <br>Avtar came to Montreal in 1975 to further his education in engineering. He completed his PhD from Concordia University in 1979 and was awarded patents for his invention of Pall Friction Dampers to make buildings earthquake resistant. <br>Avtar made significant contributions to seismic engineering. In 1984, he founded Pall Dynamics Ltd, which became a world leader in friction dampers for seismic control of structures. Pall Friction Dampers have been used in over 350 major buildings in seismic zones. Avtar received numerous awards and published over 60 technical papers. <br>• 1983 Raymond C Reese Award from American Society of Civil Engineers for outstanding contributions to structural engineering <br>• 1985 Canada Innovation Award <br>• 1987 Canada Award for Business Excellence, Invention Category <br>• 1987 Outstanding Indo-Canadian Award <br>• 2003 Fellow of Canadian Society of Civil Engineering <br> <br>Avtar was a generous philanthropist who helped engineering students with his time, knowledge and scholarships. He will be fondly remembered for his excellent sense of humour, kindness, loving heart and a remarkable work ethic. Avtar loved travelling and enjoying culinary delights. <br>Family wishes to thank Avtar’s health care team at Montreal General Hospital and Lakeshore General Hospital. <br>In lieu of flowers, any donations in Avtar’s memory to a food bank of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
