Dr. Kamla Bir passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 13, 2022 at McGill University Health Centre’s Glen site in Montreal, Quebec. She will be deeply missed by the many people she touched.

She had a full and rewarding life that began in Moga, India. She completed her BSc. and MS in India before moving to the USA at the age of 23 to do her Ph.D. in Chemistry at Purdue University in Indiana. After returning to India to teach for several years and serving as a Dean at Punjab Agricultural University, she married Dr. Krishan Bir, and moved back across the world to Montreal, Canada. In Montreal, she worked as a researcher at the Royal Victoria Hospital, as an interpreter for Immigration Canada, and in a variety of positions to support the South Asian community in Montreal. She was a trailblazer, and her compassion for the health and wellbeing of others was her main motivation.

Kamla will be fondly remembered for her pioneering strength, gregarious spirit and limitless love. She had a fervent belief in the importance of education, the centrality of family, and in community service, inspired by her father, an Indian patriot and Freedom Fighter, and her 8 beloved siblings. Nothing was more important to her than her 5 grandchildren and she was delighted and proud of every aspect of their lives and growth.

She is predeceased by her husband of 48 years, Dr. Krishan Bir. She is survived by her two children, Dr. Anupa Bir (and husband Dr. Jack Maypole) and Amit Bir (and wife Claudia Esposito); and her five grandchildren: Krishan, Kiran, Kyna, Matteo, and Luca.

Her family would particularly like to thank the oncology, cardiology, and palliative care staff at the Glen for their compassionate care and support.
