It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Edith Mary Martin on November 16 at her residence in Ottawa after a long journey with Alzheimer’s disease.

Born in Montreal, Edith grew up in Ahuntsic and Montreal West, the only child of Scottish immigrants, James Ingram and Mary (née Taylor). She began her career at the NRC in Montreal and at Atomic Energy of Canada in Deep River in the late 1940's.

At the age of 24, Edith went to New York to study cytopathology in its earliest days, learning to diagnose cancer via the examination of cells. She then moved to Ottawa to run the Civic Hospital's first cytopathology lab. There she met her first husband Wilfred Devlin and had two children, David and Jane. Later they lived in Plattsburg New York where Edith was at the heart of several community organizations and the Methodist Church.

The family moved to Dorval, Quebec in 1973. Again, active in the church community she made many new friends and was a productive organizer. After Wilfred's death in 1982, Edith met and married Bill Martin with whom she shared 19 happy years, travelling, gardening, engaging with family and friends.

After Bill's passing in 2005, Alzheimer's took hold of Edith in her 80's. She had compassionate and competent care, first at Château Pierrefonds on the West Island of Montreal, then at Symphony Senior Living in Ottawa.

Beloved mother of David (Katherine) and Jane, and step-mother of Janet (Stewart), Sandra (Roger), Ann, and Margret (Elroy), she is mourned by twelve grandchildren. She was predeceased by granddaughters Meghan and Laurel.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to honour Edith's life and to support:
The Alzheimer's Society of Canada (https://alzheimer.ca/en/take-action/make-your-donation-today)
or
McGill University, specify the "W M Martin Equipment Fund in Physics" (https://www.alumni.mcgill.ca/give/).
