It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband and father Fred Awad at the age of 80 years.

Fred had two great loves in his life. His first was teaching, which he practiced in Cairo and then at the École de Technologie Supérieure for 42 years, helping to transform it from a small college to the largest Engineering University in all of Quebec. The students there still miss the dollars he would give out in class for particularly clever answers.

His other great love was his wife Nicole, ‘Nounou’, with whom he shared 52 magnificent years. Fred and Nicole started dating in January 1972 and got married less than four months later, a timeline that is not recommended to anyone. Yet they were close to the ideal couple, complementing each other’s strengths and characters. Fred - or Dadstro, as he was known to his close family - was a loving, selfless man, a man who would never express his emotions with words but would always do so with actions.

Fred was born in Cairo but moved to Montreal in 1968 with his brother Refat, 'Ray'. The two brothers were similar and inseparable, and we regret that we will no longer have the chance to confuse them with each other.

Fred and Nicole had two sons, Tom and Ron, with whom he shared his brilliance in mathematics, his passion for knowledge, and his sense of humor. His sons will strive to continue all of these traditions.

Fred is survived by Nicole, Tom (Marisa), Ron (Laura), his grandchildren David, Karina and Emily, brother Ray (Mary), sister Marie-Rose (Philippe), nephew and niece James and Catherine, and many other nieces, nephews, friends and family.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that those who wish to express their sympathies consider making a donation to Teresa Dellar Palliative Care Residence in Fred's honor.
