After a lengthy illness Gerdy Cox-Gouron, friend to all animals, died peacefully on February 21, 2023. Gerdy was the beloved daughter of the late William Cox and Teresa Russell-Cox, the widow of the late Albert Gouron, and the niece of the late “Aunt Helen” Russell.

An animal activist and rescuer since childhood, followed by years of volunteering with various shelters and rescue organizations, Gerdy ultimately parlayed her passion and dedication into Gerdy’s Rescues and Adoptions. She was a legend in Montreal and environs for 35 plus years of compassion, dedication and success, in providing new beginnings for abandoned and homeless cats and dogs in distress. She has helped thousands of animals find loving homes and has funded surgeries and medical care for innumerable pets (often out of her own pocket). With this work came tremendous demands, all hours of the day, every day of the week.
"You rescue a dog or cat, it's in bad shape, it's been abused. You bring it around, you find it a good home, you see it happy, that's a reward for me," said Cox-Gouron. "I think animals are faithful to you. And this is what I enjoy, and this is what I'll do until the day I leave this world."
Over a year ago, when Gerdy’s health took a downturn, she got to work setting up and putting the wheels in motion to guarantee that her mission continue. She created Gerdy’s Foundation for Animals to ensure that her legacy will live on under the guardianship of long-time, devoted volunteers and board members.

Gratitude to the angels at the Teresa Dellar Palliative Care Residence for their superb care. Special thanks and appreciation to Dr. James Gruber for his kindness, caring and friendship to Gerdy.

All donations in her memory may be made to Gerdy’s Rescues & Adoptions on her website: https://gerdysrescue.org/donate/ via Canada Helps or PayPal OR donations by cheque to be mailed to: Gerdy’s Rescues, P.O. Box 21, Postal Station Victoria, Montréal, Québec H3Z 2V4

Family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of Gerdy’s life, which will be held at the Rideau Funeral Parlour at 4275, boul. des Sources, Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Quebec on Sunday, March 12, 2023. Come meet friends and volunteers and share stories from 1pm-5pm. A formal eulogy and universal blessings will take place from 2:30pm to 3:30pm.
