It's with great sadness that we announce the passing of Hilary Hill at the age of 92.
Hilary passed away peacefully just before sunrise on June 3rd, 2026, at the Lakeshore General Hospital.
Hilary was born on September 8, 1933, in Windsor Mills, Quebec, to Winifred Frances Watt (nee Buxton) and Joseph James Watt. She was the younger sister of brother Beresford James Watt and sister Shirley Marietta Clifford Pattenden (nee Watt).
Hilary is survived by her three children: David Alexander Hill (Cattaleya), Sylvia Christine Welch and Rosemary Elaine Hill (Denis); her grandchildren Karoline Bégin (Brian), Vicky Welch (Ross), Stephanie Boychuk (Lyndon), Andrew Hill (Storm) and Alexandra Bégin (Hervé); and her great-grandchildren Ian Rowsell, Allison Rowsell, Evelyn Rowsell, Lemmy Boychuk, Romilly Hill, and Tao Boychuk. She is affectionately remembered by her nieces and nephews and their families.
Hilary grew up in Windsor, Quebec and attended Richmond High School, graduating in 1950. In 1951, she completed a teaching diploma at Macdonald College. Teaching was Hilary's passion, and she taught elementary school in Windsor from 1951 to 1954. After marrying David Howard Hill in 1954, she moved to the West Island where she taught at Cedar Park Elementary School from 1954 to 1956 and then at Macdonald High School (elementary) until 1957. After starting her family, Hilary returned to work in 1973, teaching at Allancroft Elementary School in Beaconsfield until her retirement in 1999.
Hilary was a competitive athlete who played basketball at Richmond High School and was a star for the Windsor Rockettes in the Eastern Townships Women's Basketball League. While at Macdonald College, Hilary was an active participant in intercollegiate basketball. After moving to the West Island, she played for the Verdun Argyles, where they represented Quebec in the national finals.
Badminton and tennis were other sports in which she excelled. Hilary and her older sister, Shirley, were accomplished badminton players who won many Eastern Townships championships in the early 1950s. She continued playing tennis well into her 70’s and was known for her sneaky drop shots.
A longtime resident of Beaconsfield, Quebec, she lived an active life and stayed closely connected to her family and many dear friends. Her many hobbies and interests included gardening, flower arranging, dry-flower pictures, cooking and baking. Hilary’s refrigerator was always full, and she had the ability to create multicourse meals at the drop of a hat. Hilary loved playing bridge, whist, bezique and 'spite & malice'.
Hilary was a diligent organizer and could always be counted on to make suggestions as to how things should be done. She was active with the St Mary’s Church Guild, the Beaconsfield Horticulture Society, volunteered for NOVA West Island, and was a long-term member of the Beaconsfield Lawn Bowling Club (BLBC), serving on the club executive, including several years as the Club President. As late as February 2026, she was still organizing whist tournaments at the BLBC.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the dedicated staff of the Lakeshore General Hospital 4th Floor South, led by Dr. Peters-Mainville, and the nursing team who worked so diligently to address Hilary's medical issues. A special thank you to Valentine - her favourite PAB (Orderly), as well as all of the PAB's who tended to her needs. The PAB's are truly unsung heroes.
Donations can be made to the Lakeshore General Hospital Foundation or to Nova Health West Island.
Visitation is planned for Thursday, June 11th, at the Rideau Funeral Home - 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM
Hilary’s funeral will be on Friday, June 12th at 1:30 PM - Christ Church Beaurepaire in Beaconsfield.
