Jack Shin Yick Eng of Montreal passed away at the age of 94 years on December 22, 2025 surrounded by the love of his family.

He will be lovingly remembered by his children: Amy (Thomas), Sally (Denis), Susan (Tom), Mary (John), Jenny (Bill), and Gordon. He is survived by twelve grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his dear wife of 67 years, Ping Chun Eng; daughter, Diana Eng; parents, Eng Hok Yim and Fung Yong Sill; and three siblings.

Born in Toishan, China on September 17, 1931, Jack was a bright child with big dreams. He excelled in school and had a promising future. Unfortunately, the Communist Revolution brought his schooling to a halt and shattered his family. The disappointed, resilient seventeen year old escaped to Hong Kong where he met the love of his life, Ping Chun Yee. In 1954, Jack immigrated to Canada with one suitcase and a few hundred dollars to his name. Sadly, Ping Chun was not able to join him and the best that they could do was exchange love letters. Several years later, they reunited, and on January 6, 1958, they got married.

The newlyweds moved to Saint Agathe where Jack worked at his cousin’s restaurant. During that time, he studied hard to learn English. Later, they moved to Trois Rivières for better opportunities. They moved back and forth between Trois Rivières and Montreal, had seven children, and finally settled in Montreal in 1966. Jack was a very devoted husband and caring father.

With determination, hard work, and much sacrifice, Jack and his wife eventually owned three Chinese restaurants. They provided bigger homes for their family and filled them with love, warmth and laughter.

After retiring, Jack was very active in the Chinese community, having served as Secretary General and Chairman of several associations.

With pen and paper in hand, he was always ready to express his inner voice through poems. He contributed regularly to newspapers, and countless hours of writing culminated in four poetry books and multiple awards. He had some of his poems translated into English so that his children and future generations could read and enjoy them. At about seventy years old, his thirst for learning fueled his desire to learn to use a computer.

His many hobbies included gardening, cooking, playing Mah Jong, and watching the Habs play hockey. However, what brought him the most joy was spending time with family.

Visitation will be held at Rideau Funeral Home, 4239 Sources Blvd, Dollard-Des-Ormeaux on Saturday, January 3rd, 2026, from 10:00-11:00 followed by a service at 11:00.

Memorial Donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society, Société de Soins Palliatifs à Domicile, or a charity of your choice.

Special thanks to the staff at the Jewish General Hospital, the CLSC in Saint Laurent, and SSPAD for their care and compassion.
