The family is heartbroken to announce the sudden passing of Joan Carolyn Pottle Keane (Roy) on March 8, 2021 at Lakeshore General Hospital in Pointe-Claire. Born on September 3, 1936 in Montreal, she was the daughter of the late Leslie and Lily Roy.

Joan was predeceased by her first husband John in 1997; daughter Carolyn in 2007 and husband Cully Keane in 2020. She will be deeply missed by her sister Pat (Mike) Marcille of Roxboro, QC; sons Kevin (Darlene) of Fredericton, NB and Roy (Dianne) of Delray Beach, FL; stepsons Bruce (Deborah) Keane and Keith Keane; grandchildren Victoria, Kristen, Justin, Matthew, David, Miles, Eric, Jason, Kailey and Allison; great grandchildren Noah, Alexandria, Lydia, Clark, Ellie and Nora; and many special nieces, nephews and friends.

Over the years, Joan enjoyed doing administrative work for various companies on the West Island. A woman of strong faith, she dedicated countless hours to her church, St Barnabas Anglican in Pierrefonds. Joan spent many hours in fellowship and leadership with involvement in various outreach and community events.

Joan always joked that she was the meanest mother in the world, while her family knew that couldn’t be further from the truth. Joan’s family meant everything to her and her greatest joy was having everyone together during chaotic Christmases under one roof and family reunions in places like Killbear Park, ON; Ocean City, NJ or Prince Edward Island, highlighted by the infamous Pottle Family Talent Shows and “Mother Joanie’s” camping pants.

Winters in Florida, summers on the Cape, and cruises to many corners of the globe are a testament to Joan’s love of travel. A lifetime dream was to go on an African Safari. This past January she discovered and was finally able to realize this dream virtually when watching the documentary Naledi with her grandson, Eric.

The family reaped many benefits from Joan’s crafting talents: sewing clothing, Halloween and figure skating costumes and flower girl dresses; creating Christmas stockings for the grandchildren (and pets) and knitting sweaters, mittens and socks. Joan loved cooking and baking up a storm especially for our many family gatherings.

As a devoted mother and grandmother, Joan was so proud of her children’s and grandchildren’s passions. She was always there cheering from the sidelines of many hockey, football, soccer, lacrosse and baseball games; figure skating practices or shows; or applauding in the audiences at dance shows and musical productions from Vancouver to P.E.I. to Shrewsbury.

Cremation has taken place but due to Covid-19 restrictions, there will be no visitation or service at this time. The good news is, there will be a celebration of Joan’s life at a later date (in more normal & sociable times). The family requests that any donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Alzheimer’s Society of Canada or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
