<div itemprop="description">It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joan Stephens (née Benjamin), who died on June 1st, 2026, at the age of 84, on the West Island of Montreal. Born in St. Paul's, Grenada, Joan immigrated to Canada and built a distinguished life rooted in faith, family, service, and love. <br> <br>Joan earned a degree in Sociology from Sir George Williams University (now Concordia) and completed her teacher's training at McGill University. As a dedicated business instructor at Pierrefonds Comprehensive High School and the West Island Career Centre, she inspired and mentored countless students throughout her laudable teaching career. <br> <br>Joan is survived by her beloved husband of 54 years, Christian Stephens; their children Yola, Kharyl, and Tanya; her daughter-in-law Kimberly; her cherished grandchildren Aisha, Kiano, Sanaya, and Jaden; her siblings Cicely, Verna, and Carl; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, loving extended family and dear friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Cyril and May Benjamin (née Grant); her sisters Marjorie and Paula; and her son-in-law, Dwane. <br> <br>Renowned for her warmth, wit, and generous spirit, Joan possessed a rare gift for making everyone feel valued and welcomed. Whether hosting family gatherings, preparing a memorable meal, sharing a cherished story, or greeting loved ones with her signature "Hello darling," she had a way of bringing joy and happiness to all who knew her. <br> <br>Joan was a devoted member of St. Barnabas Anglican Church in Pierrefonds and served actively with many committees including- the Prayer Group and the Order of St. Luke Healing Ministry. She was a founding member of the West Island Ladies League (WILL), a member of the Montreal Grenada Association, as well as the West Island Black Community Association (WIBCA), where she generously tutored young children every Saturday. <br> <br>Her legacy is one of fierce love, steadfast loyalty, gracious hospitality, and unshakeable faith. She will be remembered not merely for her accomplishments, but for the warmth, kindness, and love she shared so generously throughout her life. <br> <br>Visitation will take place at Rideau Funeral Home on Thursday, June 18, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A Funeral Service celebrating Joan’s life will be held at St. Barnabas Church on Friday, June 19, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. <br> <br>Donations in Joan’s memory may be made to the Gem Stars Circle of Excellence Scholarship Fund (Gemstar Circle of Excellence | High School Students Scholarship program - https://www.gemstarcircleofexcellence.com), an organization dedicated to the advancement of youth through education and skill-building. <br> <br>“Well done, good and faithful servant.” — Matthew 25:23</div>
