It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John Palkhivala on March 26, 2026, just before his 93rd birthday. He died peacefully at home surrounded by family and loved ones.
To understand John's background, one must travel back 100 years to 1920s London, where Kaikushru (Keki) Palkhivala, a Zoroastrian ophthalmic surgeon-in-training from Bombay, met Florence Davies, a Unitarian university student from Pontypridd, a small town in South Wales. They married and settled in Bombay, but John was born in London, England. When he was 11, John lost his father to a heart attack. He stayed in Bombay with his mother and his aunt Maneck, attended the Cathedral and John Connon School, and graduated from Sydenham College of the University of Bombay in 1954.
John began his working career at Burmah-Shell Refineries in Bombay. In 1962, on a trip to Darjeeling, India, he met Kay Hynes, a school teacher at the Loreto Convent there. Soon after, John emigrated to Canada, where they were married on June 27, 1964, and moved into an apartment on Fort St. in Montreal. When their children arrived: Shirin (06/27/1966), James (06/06/1968), and Alison (11/29/1970), they moved to Town of Mount Royal, where they lived for over 50 years.
In the next generation, Shirin (m. Framji Petit, 06/26/1999) became mother to Zara (10/20/2000) and Kyra (10/03/2002). Jim (m. Josephine Sciortino 10/08/2003) produced Sonya (03/14/2004) and Mia (02/21/2006), while Alison (m. Stephen Cherlet 09/23/2000) produced Val (01/21/2004) and Calvin (11/16/2005). The family enjoyed many trips to Europe and to India featuring excellent meals, good wine, and loyal friendships. John will be missed by all of them for his warmth and hospitality.
