It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John (Shane) McGovern on June 18. Beloved husband of Yolanda for 58 years; loving father of Manuel and Ana (Kevin Maguire); cherished grandfather of Chanelle, Shane, Tim and Sean. He will also be greatly missed by his sister Ita, many relatives and friends. He is predeceased by his brother Padraig(Celia) and sisters Lucy (Larry O'Reilly), Veronica and Aine (Tony Lawton).

Shane was born in Belturbet, Co. Cavan, Ireland and moved to England to pursue a career in Aeronautical Engineering at Fairey Aviation, then at Hawker Siddley. In 1963 the family emigrated to Canada. Shane worked until retirement at Canadair (Bombardier) where he had many friends and colleagues. In the 1980s in their Surveillance Systems division he worked in the pioneering field of military drones.

He was a man of many talents and enjoyed fly-fishing, birdwatching and astronomy. He edited the newsletter of the St. Patrick Society in Montreal and did publicity for Cine Gael, the Irish Film Society. His passion was Irish history and he published “The Town Book of the Borough of Belturbet” covering his hometown history from 1657 to 1840. It is now in Maynooth University and the National Library of Ireland. He loved Ireland, but embraced life in Canada too, supporting The Canadians, skiing and snowshoeing.

The Funeral will be held on Wednesday, June 27 at 11 am at St. Luc Parish followed by the burial at Rideau Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The West Island Palliative Care Centre in Kirkland (http://wipcr.ca) in his memory, where Shane spent his last days in the care of their wonderful staff.
