It is with profound sadness and deep gratitude for a life beautifully lived that we announce the passing of Kanawathipillai Samuel, who departed peacefully on February 10th, 2026, in Montreal, surrounded by his loving family, at the remarkable age of 103+.

Samuel was the beloved son of late Charlotte Kathiravelu and Kanawathipillai, and a loving brother to the late K. M. Joseph (late Sornam Anna Mary).

He was the loyal husband of the late Teresa Angeline Alagaratnam, with whom he shared 71 years of marriage, a partnership rooted in faith, resilience, and unwavering commitment. Together, they built a family that became the centre of his world and the legacy he cherished most.

Samuel was a loving and devoted father to Francis Samuel (Jesica), Cynthia Arulanandam (late Kingsley), and Rienzie Lawrence (Sumathy). He was a proud and adoring grandfather to Rozanne Arulanandam (Mark Rallis), Geetha Samuel, Crithicca Samuel, Partheban Samuel, Tyrone Lawrence (Bianka), and Abbey Lawrence, and a treasured great-grandfather to Anjali and Danae Rallis, who brought him immense joy in his later years.

Samuel was born in the northern peninsula of Jaffna, Sri Lanka, where the foundations of his character were formed. A natural sportsman and an exceptionally social man, he was known for his humour, warmth, and ability to make others feel instantly at ease. Strong-willed, resilient, and deeply capable, he faced life with quiet determination and grace. His greatest achievements were not measured in titles, but in the life he built. Raising his family with integrity, standing as a pillar within his extended family, and offering love, guidance, and laughter to all who knew him.

A man of deep Catholic faith, prayer was central to his life and the way through which he found strength, peace, and connection with God. A longtime parishioner of St. Thomas à Becket Church, his faith guided his actions and grounded his life in kindness, humility, and service to others.

Samuel was a cherished son, brother, husband, father, Godfather, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend. As the last remaining member of his generation, he was a living link to family history, tradition, and shared memory. No one ever left his presence without a smile or a laugh. His gentle humour, loving spirit, and steady presence left a lasting impression on everyone he met.

He will be deeply missed by his loving immediate and extended family, friends, caregivers (Suba, Grace, Cheryl), and all those whose lives he touched. Though our hearts are heavy, we take comfort in knowing that he has been reunited with his loved ones and has returned to God, whom he served faithfully throughout his life.
“Those we love never truly leave us; they live on in the stories we tell, the laughter we share, and the faith we carry forward.”

-----------

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the UN crisis fund in Grandpa's memory. They are currently working to help families in Sri Lanka affected by the aftermath of cyclone Ditwah.

https://crisisrelief.un.org/en/donate-sri-lanka
