It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved mother, Mahvash Khazaei, on April 11, at the age of 89, at home in Montreal. She took her last breaths while holding the hands of her devoted husband of 68 years Faridoon Pourmand. She is survived by her daughters Mastaneh, Marjaneh and Afsaneh; her grand-children Taraneh, Behrouz, and Elsa; and her great-grand-daughter Leyla. She also leaves behind her dear sister Farideh and brothers Dr. Mehrdad and Dr. Farzin, and her beloved nieces and nephews.

Mahvash was born in Kermanshah, Iran, and was a loving and devoted older sister. From an early age, she assisted her siblings with their studies, and her mother with daily routines. When play acting, she always wanted the role of the teacher. Mahvash was an excellent student and began work as a schoolteacher after high school graduation. Her innovative methods earned her accolades; she retired from teaching after 22 years of service.

Mahvash was uncomplaining, and never refused a challenge. She reinvented herself as a businesswoman after immigrating to Canada, and helped establish the first Persian Sunday school in Montreal so that children in the community could remain connected to the beautiful Farsi language and culture of Iran. She took great pride in her home and was happiest when feeding her loved ones a delicious meal, nurturing her decades-long friendships over weekly card games, or sitting across from her husband sipping on a fragrant cup of tea while working on a crossword.

Mahvash was an exemplary wife, mother, sister, daughter, friend, and community member. She lived by the motto “what remains after you are gone is your good name, honor, and respect that you have earned in your life.” She was devoted to her family, and generous to a fault. Her open-door policy was the reason for boisterous family gatherings around lavish supper tables, and the reason that many nieces and nephews opted to pursue university studies in Canada.

We were fortunate to have had her in our lives for as long as we did. It is hard to accept that she is no longer among us; but we bear her loss knowing that she is surrounded by angels, free of suffering, and in the company of her beloved mother Farokh-Laghah and her dear sister Parvaneh.

We welcome you in celebrating her life and legacy on April 22 at Rideau Gardens, from 10:30-12:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, we request donations be made in her name to the Alzheimer Society of Canada.
