Born in Noordwijkerhout, Netherlands in 1936, our beloved mother Ria Esselaar passed away on December 27th, 2019 in Montreal, Canada. Having lived through Occupied Netherlands during the Second World War, she enjoyed recounting her life stories, including tales of sailing, being a gymnast, and performing in dance in Montreal. She enjoyed good food, good drink and the company of good people. A bookkeeper by trade, with a mischievous mind, a brutally honest opinion, a loving soul and a generous heart, she profoundly impacted many people’s lives. She is pre-deceased by the love of her life, Caspar Lambert Marie Esselaar, and is survived by her brother Hans Knoppert, sons Andrew Jacob and Erik Michael, daughter-in-law Kim Jody, and grandsons Kai Matan and Ethan Caspar.

A “Colourful Celebration of Life” luncheon will be held at Le Manoir Restaurant (600 Boulevard Saint-Jean [corner Hymus] Pointe-Claire, QC) on Friday, January 3rd at 11 o’clock. The Celebration will be live-streamed by video for those who cannot physically attend. In lieu of black, we request that you wear something colourful or outrageous, as Ria would have done. Donations to Diabetes Canada or St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation in her name are requested in lieu of flowers or gifts.
