Maria's life story...by Julius Jr, her son.

Maria was born and raised in Budapest, Hungary with one older sister. They grew up through the second world war, while their father was in the army. Shortly after the war, my mother was married at an early age and gave birth to my older half-brother (Leslie Ribar) who became ill at the age of three and lost his sense of hearing.

Maria, her husband, and Leslie fled Hungary during the Hungarian revolution of 1956 to start a new life in Canada where she worked as a nurse at St. Mary’s Hospital. A few years later, Maria separated from her husband and Leslie was raised by his father.

After reconnecting with others in the Hungarian community, Maria met Julius Lencz (Sr.) and were married in 1965 and had one child (me).
My father being a cook and pastry chef by trade, they decided to open a business and successfully owned and operated a European pastry and delicatessen for many years, with my father doing all the baking and my mother operating the retail sales portion of the business.

Maria and Julius Sr. divorced in 1983 for irreconcilable differences, when I was 18 years old.
Several years later my mother met and married Paul Huszagh and started a new life together, buying a house and living together until his passing from Cancer in 1997.

Maria continued to live alone in her home she loved and cared for so much, helping raise her grandson Christian while my wife (Susan Price) and myself worked weekdays. She also devoted much of her time to the Hungarian United Church with various functions and fundraisers until 2017, when multiple health issues forced her to move into an intermediary resource facility (CIUSSS).

She lived out her golden years visited regularly by family and friends she had made along the way.

A special heartfelt thanks to the wonderful staff at Valeo Pierrefonds Residence and the compassionate and loving care she received in her final days at Teresa Dellar Palliative Care Residence.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Teresa Dellar Palliative Care Residence would be greatly appreciated. https://residencesoinspalliatifs.ca/en/
