With gratitude for her life, it is with sadness that we announce the passing of Marie Gatto Meisels on August 2, 2026 at the age of 93. She is survived by her children Susan (René) and David (Juliana); grandsons Alex and Toby; brother Ernest (Mary) and sister Bertelle (Allan). She was predeceased by her siblings Irene, Lonnie, Jack and Bernie, and her parents Bert and Margaret.
Born in 1933 in New Waterford, Nova Scotia, Mum was cosmopolitan and independent, and had the urge to travel the world. She worked in LA in the 1950’s soaking up the jazz scene and then toured Italy and France staying with her brother Jack. Back in Montreal, she used her sharp mind and quick wit to succeed as a corporate secretary. After the birth of her children, she became a teacher, first at PCHS and St. Thomas, and then after returning to Concordia, taught English as a second language at Urgel-Archambault.
Mum’s greatest joy was seeing her children achieve and thrive. She beamed every time she saw them and took pleasure in watching her grandsons become well-rounded and caring young men.
We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to the staff at the Chateau Royal for their companionship and compassion, and for letting Mum be the life of the reception desk: flashing her bright smile, sharing her sense of humour and her endless energy.
Please join the family to honour and celebrate Marie’s life on Saturday, August 29, 2026 from 1pm to 3pm at Rideau Funeral Home (4275 des Sources, DDO).
