Mildred Bertha Pope
September 5, 2023
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved wife, mother & grandmother, Millie Pope, nee Sparks, at the Lakeshore General Hospital on September 5th, 2023 following a brief stay, with family by her side. She will be greatly missed by her husband Doug Pope, children Lesley (Brad McLachlan), Karen (late Mario Tkalec), Matthew (Kim Waltho) and grandchildren Scott McLachlan (Jess Schoyen), Sean McLachlan, Zachary Pope, and Nicholas Pope. Millie was pre-deceased by her parents John Charles ‘Jack’ Sparks and Sarah Morris, her brothers Leslie (Kay), Lawrence (Esther), and her sister Dorothy.
Born & raised in Montreal’s East End, Millie was proud of her Newfoundland heritage, and lived in her parents native Lower Island Cove for some of her early years. A very active person from childhood, this energy continued throughout her life. She had fond memories of fun times with childhood friends Ruth, Olga & Audrey. Millie was an early driver, learning the skill on country roads near their family cottage on Lake L’Achigan. Always one to ‘go get things done’, Millie’s first job was at Eaton’s, at age 14. She graduated from Commercial High and started her career at the Protestant School Board in 1949, followed by Johnson & Johnson and Canadian Car and Bus Advertising. During this time she met a young architecture student who liked skiing. This changed her chosen course in life - they skied, fell in love & married in 1960. She supported him financially and editorially through his final 2 years of university.
After starting a family in 1963, Millie devoted her energy to the role of wife, mother & homemaker - excelling as cook, baker, host, decorator, gardener, renovation project manager & overall role model - organizing the family and volunteering in the community, including 40 years cooking for the local Meals on Wheels. She was an avid (and fast) reader, enjoyed playing Bridge, Birding, Skating, Skiing & doing Crossword puzzles. Millie never had a bad vacation or trip! She loved to get away to the family cottage on Lac Archambault each summer and on many camping trips including those with good friends Betty & Barry Gunhouse and family. She loved trips further afield as well, travelling with Doug on many business & leisure trips including England, France & Greece, Carribean, Hawaii & Mexico. Millie was a very active member of several Bridge clubs, the Pointe Claire Curling Club and the Pointe Claire Lawn Bowling Club for many years.
A private celebration of life & interment at Lakeview Memorial Gardens will be planned in 2024. Donations in Millie’s name can be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada or a charity of your choice. The family wishes to thank Dr. Eric Lillie, the many support people, and the dedicated teams at the healthcare institutions that Millie has visited over the past 5 years. Their excellent care enabled Millie to continue to enjoy life! Montreal General, Gingras Lindsay Rehabilitation Center, Lakeshore General, Notre Dame, Royal Victoria, Montreal Neuro, and the Jewish General.
Millie will be remembered for her pro-active nature, her energy & her active participation in life! Millie, Mom, Nanny we love you! XOXOXO
