After a lengthy cardiovascular illness, Neil McQueen Standen died on 29 July 2023 in his 84th year. He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Terri (Grannary). He will be missed by his step-son Kevin (Karine) and step-grandchildren, Liam and Mack; by his children Karyn (Paul Huppé), Philip (Carol) and Paula (Rohin Lakani); grandchildren Jacob, Alaister, Isaac, Maxim, Christian and Charlotte; brothers Dale and Eric, nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents, Sydney and Effie and his eldest brother, Philip.

Born on 22 December 1939 in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, in 1941 his family moved to Burnaby, British Columbia. He graduated from Burnaby South High School in 1957 and earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering from U.B.C. in 1962 and a Master’s degree from McGill in 1964. After two years practicing aeronautical engineering at Boeing Corporation in Seattle, he worked for the Department of Transport. In 1990 he began a consulting business specializing in noise abatement for airports and residential projects, and wind abatement for large urban buildings.

Neil cherished his many grandchildren and brightened the worlds of his nieces and nephews. He followed their accomplishments with great interest, all of whom benefitted from his deep learning advice and support. To his younger brothers he was a devoted and conscientious mentor. To friends he was steadfastly loyal and generous.

He enjoyed military history and served on the founding Board of the Juno Beach Centre in Normandy, France, in order to honor his father Sydney who was among the first Canadians in landing crafts on D-Day. He relished the Scottish heritage that was a large part of his ancestry. Despite his lengthy illness and other adversities, he maintained a sense of humour and tolerated amiably the friendly ribbings of many, giving as well as he got.

A celebration of life will take place on August 5th at Rideau Memorial, Montreal, with visitations from 1-3pm, followed by testimonials which can be seen live or on replay at https://funeraweb.tv/en/diffusions/77614.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation in Neil’s name would be appreciated.
