It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Rose Pinto de Souza, on January 11, 2025 at the age of 83.

Rose will be missed by her daughters Anita (Robert) and Zelia, along with her grandchildren Julian, Paula, Adrienne and Marcus. She also leaves behind her sisters and brother, Bertha, Carmel and Jackie, her nephews and nieces as well as many extended family members, friends, ex-colleagues and a furry friend.

Rose’s remarkable life spanned several decades and continents. She was born in Chorao (Goa), India on December 31, 1941. At the age of 23, she married her loving husband of 51 years, Adrian de Souza (1933-2015) and moved to Uganda to start a new life. It was there that they welcomed their daughters into the world. While in Africa, Rose proudly worked as a school teacher while raising her children. When the political situation in Uganda became untenable, she was forced on a moment’s notice to leave everything behind and relocate with her family to Montreal, which was home for the remainder of her life. She stayed in close touch with her roots, having acted as President of the Quebec Goan Association.

Rose proudly worked as a Librarian at Vanier College (1975-2010), where she guided generations of young students towards bright futures. Her academic career was consecrated by a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from Western University, which she obtained at the age of 53.
Those who knew Rose will tell you that she was an undeniable force and Renaissance woman: a scholar and voracious reader, exceptional cook, world traveler, avid gardener, keen investor, church warden, community organizer and volunteer, as well as devoted philanthropist.

Most importantly, Rose was a loving grandma and steady source of strength, guidance and affection for her whole family. She was forever young in her mindset and lived life on her terms until the very end, when she quietly passed away with her rosary firmly in hand. Rose is off on a new adventure, accompanied by her parents Caetano and Luciana, her sister Marie, and her husband, Adrian. She will be deeply missed.

In her memory, a donation to Doctors Without Borders would be appreciated.
