Upson Anthony Dennis, born December 15, 1943, was received by his Lord on the 17th day of February 2025 with his family by his side. He fought an aggressive form of lung cancer with grace, wit, and unwavering faith. He is predeceased by his loving parents Rita (nee Ector) and Urich Dennis.
He is survived by his ex-wife and friend Beatrice “Kathy” Knights; his greatest achievements, his children Dr. Marcia-Lisa, Shelley (Stephane), Saccha (Nicholas), and Martin (Stephanie); the lights of his life, his five grandchildren Vanessa, Jacob, Noah, Isaiah, and Ellis; his siblings Robbie (Frances), Gerrard “Gerry”, Ronson “Ronnie” (Sybil), Dr. Barbara, Lloyd (Esther “Joan” ), Bryan (Lisa); cousins Freddy and Cynthia Ector; many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings Edmund, David, Marlene, Lennox “Lenny”, Yvonne, and Lauriston “Laurie”.
Upson had a unique name of which he was very proud and was quick to correct people when they mixed up the order of his name. He was born in Port of Spain and raised in Belmont, Trinidad and Tobago and was one of 13 children. He was an excellent table tennis player who won many tournaments and was member of the Catholic Youth organization (CYO). He worked for the city of Port of Spain at City Hall as an operations manager. He immigrated to Montreal in 1968 to marry his sweetheart Kathy. He was employed with Wonderbra and French Maid Dymantie as a self-taught computer programmer until his retirement.
Upson had a great sense of humour. He was genuinely warm, friendly, and a down to earth person who could strike up a conversation with anyone and mastered the dance floor with his moves. A man of hobbies, he loved to tinker around with his many inventions and was adept at fixing things that others thought were broken. He took great pride in his yearly creche which morphed from the Christmas manger scene (with a working well!) to the crucifixion on Golgotha that has a prominent place in his apartment year-round. He also enjoyed collecting his 40 + baseball caps to mark his numerous adventures.
A son, father, grandfather, cousin, uncle, great uncle, and friend. He will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him.
The funeral mass will take place on Thursday, Feb 27, 2025 at 11:00 am at St Luke’s Parish by Fr. Bertrand Montpetit and will be livestreamed at this link https://youtube.com/live/6Ra6LdN7mMc?feature=share
Following the mass, interment will be at Rideau Memorial Gardens. Reception to follow at 2pm at an announced location.
The family would like to extend sincere gratitude to Inga Stenbar-Long, Upson’s “adopted daughter”, and the staff at CLSC Lac St Louis, especially Rubina who supported him during his final weeks. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Health Association of African Canadians for the Black Lives Living Well project at info@haac.ca (www.haac.ca)
