Wayne Peter Hogan
May 2, 1944 - September 8, 2023
Wayne (a.k.a. Dad or Papa) passed away after a brief battle with cancer on September 8th. Pre-deceased by his best friend and wife of 55 years, Lillian Hogan (nee Cicciu).
Devoted dad to Kim (David Hannon) and Karen (Steve Broad), and loving Papa to Ryan, Kaitlyn and Samuel. Big brother to the late Glenn (Marlene), Donna, the late Barry and Neil (Debbie); and wonderful brother-in-law to Linda Cicciu. Pre-deceased by his loving parents Kenneth and Rita (nee O’Rourke).
Irreplaceable "Uncle Wayne" to Gino (Maria), Lea Anne (Rob), Shannon (Jay), Erin (Shawn), Shawn (Amanda), Kevin, Lauren, Alexa, Riley, Aidan, Adam, Liam, Grace, Jake, Willow and Weston. He will also be missed by many cousins, extended family and countless friends. Everyone will miss his weekly phone calls simply to say hi.
Wayne was his name and insurance was his game…at least until he retired from the helm of Le Group LA&H in 2001 after a 40-year career. His business philosophy was much the same as in life: treat others the way that you want to be treated and only ask them to do what you are willing to roll up your sleeves and do yourself.
A fan since birth of every professional Montreal sports team wearing the Bleu, Blanc, Rouge, dad was always the perfect combination of GM, coach and game official all rolled into one. While dad loved his work, he lived for family gatherings and celebrations, where he always had a seat at the “big table”. With the gift of the gab, he was known to recount adventures over and over and over again. He was notorious for having a detailed accounting of exactly how many attended any event.
Dad’s boundless generosity was ever present in his devotion to volunteering and giving back to the community – a commitment that increased in his retirement years and only stopped a few weeks before his passing. He tirelessly spent time at local fundraisers, coordinating the finances for many, pre-planning behind the scenes, helping to set up and take down tables and chairs at any event, and delivering mom’s baked goods all across town. He was incredibly happy helping others.
Dad spent over 20 years as a volunteer minor league hockey coach for the BOP Clovers; over 30 years as a member of the Fossils Club of Montreal — raising funds to send children to camps; over 40 years as a devoted member of the community at Transfiguration of Our Lord Parish — where he served as a warden, founding member of the Men’s club and the Ball & Chain Bowling league (just to name a few); and over 50 years serving on various not-for-profit and charitable boards in the greater Montreal area.
Dad was especially proud of his Irish heritage. It was a given that dad would be at every Montreal Irish event. He was a long-standing member of the United Irish Societies of Montreal, the Ireland Canada Chamber of Commerce, the Erin Sports Association and the St Patrick’s Society of Montreal. Dad was honoured to have been the 2002 Grand Marshall of the St. Patrick's Day Parade and the 2016 Irishman of the Year.
Special thanks to the devoted staff at the Jewish General Hospital and St. Mary's Hospital, especially Dr Drummond, Dr Pelletier, Dr Miller, Dr Munro, Dr Basile and the nurses in the ER and 5 Main. A heartfelt thank you and recognition to the devoted nurses, staff, and volunteers at the Teresa Dellar Palliative Care Residence for providing exceptional and respectful care to dad in his last week.
Visitations on Thursday, September 21 from 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday, September 22 from 2 to 7 pm at Rideau Funeral Home, 4275 Blvd des Sources, Dollard-Des Ormeaux. A Celebration of Wayne’s life will take place on Saturday, September 23 at 11:00 am at Transfiguration of our Lord Church, 11775 Filion, Montreal.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Wayne’s memory to the Teresa Dellar Palliative Care Residence (https://residencesoinspalliatifs.ca/en/).
