It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Bill Holt on December 13, 2021, while in the arms of his loving wife Fran. He was being treated in hospital for complications from non Hodgkins lymphoma. He is predeceased by his parents Anne (Degraw) and Arthur Snell, his in-laws Marion (Foster) and Reginald Poole, his brother Sonny Snell and his brother-in-law Ed Bordash. He is survived by his cherished and loving wife Frances (Poole), his sisters Nancy Dunnigan (John), Eileen Bordash (the late Ed), Gail Adams (Marv), sister-in-law Eileen Snell (the late Sonny), brothers-in-law Owen Poole (Kathleen), Gordon Poole and numerous nieces and nephews. Bill loved his family unconditionally and was so proud of what everyone accomplished. He thoroughly enjoyed his conversations with Marion when she came for Sunday dinners.

Bill obtained his Bachelor of Education in Physical Education and his Master’s in Education from McGill University and taught his entire career at Lindsay Place High School in Pointe-Claire, QC. He primarily taught Cycle One students, Advanced English to senior students and Canadian History to Grade 10 students. He volunteered his time to work with at risk students throughout his career and into his retirement, and was extremely proud of everyone’s achievements. Bill wrote a book on Canadian History that was adopted by the Lester B. Pearson School Board. The royalties were donated to his school to help students needing financial assistance. He served on a number of school committees throughout his life, won several awards for his service, organized reunions and other major events for his school and coached numerous sports teams (basketball, football, lacrosse, rugby) for Lindsay Place and in the community, many of which won major championships. In his early retirement, Bill taught English and Canadian History to International students and thoroughly enjoyed learning about Chinese cooking.

Bill was a multitalented athlete, playing basketball for Sun Youth as a teenager (going to the Nationals) and baseball for community teams in Montreal North, where he grew up. After graduating from Malcolm Campbell High School, Bill played both varsity football and basketball at Macdonald College and for the McGill Redmen. McGill’s 1969 football team (Mooneymen) and their 1976-77 basketball team both went to Nationals. He was an avid golfer, a racquet sport player, a great listener, an entertaining storyteller and a supportive friend to all who knew him. Most especially, he was a wonderful husband and family member, who filled our lives with love and laughter.

Bill received excellent care from his medical team at Lakeshore General Hospital. Our family extends special thanks to Dr. Li, nurse Sabrina Jeans, Dr. Guirguis (family GP) and home care nurse Sophie Lavoie. Plans for Bill’s Celebration of Life service will be announced at a later date. Further information may be found on the Rideau Funeral Home (DDO) website. Should you feel so inclined, donations may be made to a charity of your choice, in memory of Bill. As a final tribute to this well respected and much loved teacher, friend, colleague and coach, the flags at Lindsay Place High School (now called St. Thomas High School) are at half mast. Our family sincerely thanks both school communities for this unexpected honour and beautiful gesture. RIP Bill, you are missed.
