Yvonne Brenda Greig née Lowman
April 6, 1930 - September 27, 2023
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Yvonne Brenda Greig (née Lowman). She passed away peacefully after losing a brief battle with a lung infection. We are comforted that she left painlessly at her residence after having spent her last few days and moments in the continued company of family members, including her loving daughters and grandchildren.
Yvonne was a devoted mother, doting nana and faithful friend (two dating from high school!). Kind and generous with both her family and her wide circle of friends, she would frequently surprise them with fun gifts, her engaging company and most importantly, with her unwavering support when it was needed the most. An intellectual to her core, she also loved to share her depth of knowledge to all – or whomever - would listen.
A generous volunteer, even when in her 80’s, she still spent many a day as the producer of a cable TV show for the Unitarian Congregation in Mississauga or assisting in various roles at the Village Playhouse community theatre. Yet she still had the time and energy to swim three times a week, play tennis, go on long walks and regularly meet with friends for an Opera or Symphony. She was a long-time member of Toastmasters International (attaining the highest level, Distinguished Toastmaster) and the Parliamentary Society of Toronto.
A firm believer in perseverance and hard work, she would always see a thing through to its end – on her own terms - her lifelong mantra being “I’ll do it my way”. This tenacity allowed her to accomplish many great things including a Bachelor’s and two Masters degrees completed when she was in her mid 50’s. This same trait served her well when she was afflicted with a massive stroke at the age of 84. At this difficult time her new mantra became “I’ll get there”. And remarkably within months she rose out of her wheelchair to walk again, earning the respect of her astonished rehab physiotherapist with this feat.
For these and many other reasons, Yvonne will live on fondly in the hearts of her daughters Alison (Oscar), Jennifer (Karl) and Gillian; her grandchildren Alberto (Sandra), Alexander (Geneviève), Stephanie and Jonathan as well as in the hearts of her many other relatives and friends. She is predeceased by her daughter Ellen, husband Douglas and son-in-law Ronald Lafrenière.
We are so grateful for the compassionate care Yvonne received in the past years from her many companions, including Bonnie, who saw her through till the end, her physical therapist Terry and the Bayview Centre staff.
Any donations to CHSLD Bayview Centre, the CNIB foundation for the blind or to your favorite elderly care and support group would be greatly appreciated.
