Carol Louise Wiens BA, MLIS, 1951-2020
It is with great sorrow that we announce the unexpected passing (from natural causes) of Carol on September 30, 2020 in her home. Carol was a lifetime resident of Montreal and former Head Librarian at the Montreal Neurological Institute. Carol retired in 2009, and spent many happy hours painting and taking classes at the Visual Arts Centre in Westmount, as well as being an active member of the Westmount poetry group.
Carol was a bright, energetic social person who had many friends from numerous endeavours. After graduation from Bishops University, Carol gravitated to the Montreal General Hospital where she worked as a Unit Clerk for many years. She traveled extensively at that time, touring England several times, as well as Europe, Egypt and South America. Carol then returned to McGill and gained her MLIS in 1989, working at the Montreal Neurological Institute for twenty years. Carol coordinated a major library renovation in the first few years of that career. While at McGill, Carol met Dr. Robert H Michel, an archivist, and they spent many happy years together.
Carol loved all things beautiful, the Fine Arts, fine music and fine restaurants, often meeting friends for lunches. One of her happiest moments was entering her watercolour paintings in the Visual Arts Centre Student Art show each year. Carol shared her kind-hearted spirit with a wide variety of people - friends from childhood, as well as McGill connections, and library friends, the Westmount Gardening gang and the poetry group.
Carol is survived by her partner, Rob Michel, her siblings Claudia, Wendy, David (Camille) and several nieces and nephews, and their children, as well as cousins and extended family and many dear friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Ross and Peggy Wiens formerly of Montreal.
In lieu of floral tributes,a donation to the Centres des Arts Visuel/ The Visual Arts Centre, 350 Victoria Ave Westmount QC H3Z 2N4 (or to a charity of your choice) would be greatly appreciated. Interment of Carol's ashes will take place in Edmonton in early November. Her family would welcome any written expressions of condolences and memories as well as photographs, which may be shared through this website. A beloved daughter, sister, sister-in-law and cousin: a generous aunt: a devoted partner and a fabulous friend to many - Carol will be missed and will remain in our hearts always.
