Chandra Gowrisankaran (nee Dabholkar)
March 22, 1939 - August 2, 2019
Growing up in Mumbai, Chandra was a student extraordinaire. After earning a
M.A. from Bombay University in Mathematics in 1961, she was selected for a
research career in mathematics at the world famous Tata Institute of
Fundamental Research. She met and married Gowri there in 1964. They
migrated to Canada in 1968, where she earned a Ph.D. in Mathematics from
McGill University in 1972 and a M.Comp.Sc. in Computer Science from
Concordia University in 1987. She taught mathematics at Dawson College from
1982-2011. She was a devoted teacher, beloved by her many students, and has
published significant research papers in mathematics and computer science.
She served as the Chair of Mathematics at Dawson from 1999-2002.
Chandra was a multi-talented person. She was an artist of considerable breadth
and ability. She has produced many watercolours, oil, and multimedia paintings
and has won prizes in art competitions. She was an avid gardener and
everybody appreciated the beautiful flowers that she grew. She loved learning
throughout her life, including studying Chinese and Spanish over the last several
years. She loved singing classical Indian music. After retiring from Dawson
College she took up bridge and prided herself on often winning the weekly bridge
quizzes. She was an amazing and innovative cook who loved to spoil her
grandchildren by inventing new recipes.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held (as per her wish) at the
Mount Royal Funeral Complex on December 21, 2019. Her body will be
cremated following Hindu rituals on August 7, 2019.
Chandra is survived by her husband 'Gowri' of 54 years and her children Aditi
and Gautam (Kathie Barnes). She was the wonderful and most loving Aaji of
Sheela, Leena and Lakshmi. Her wit, candor, and the chapatis she lovingly
made will be missed by many family and friends.
The family wants to thank the cardiologist Dr. Richard Sheppard and the
wonderful staff at the Jewish General Hospital for their loving and extraordinary
care. In lieu of flowers a donation to Jewish General Hospital Foundation will be
appreciated.
