With heavy hearts, we announce that Elda Hackwell passed away peacefully on September 15, 2024 at the age of 90, with her loving family close by her side. She is survived by her cherished husband, Ted and devoted children Stuart (Karen) and Julie (Richard). Elda was the beloved “Grammy” to Emily (Matthew), William, Hannah, Jack, and Samantha. Greatly involved in their lives, nothing made her prouder, or brought a greater sparkle to her eye, than her grandchildren.
Born in Dunham, Quebec on January 24, 1934, Elda was the youngest child of Elsie (Tait) and Marcus Doherty, with three older brothers, Geoffrey (Thelma), Wallace (Patricia) and Russell (Noreen). They were raised on the family farm. In 1955, she graduated from the Montreal General Hospital School of Nursing, and proudly advanced her career in obstetrics, taking post-graduate courses in Boston and at McGill University. She was very proud of her nursing career and remained close to her classmates throughout her life.
Elda and Ted were the closest of friends and partners for over 67 years. Their names were forever linked, always mentioned in one breath by family and friends, and were seldom seen apart. As long time residents of Pointe Claire, Elda was always an active member of the community. They enjoyed many years as members of the Lawn Bowling Club, where Elda volunteered on the Board, and participated in many club events.
Elda will be greatly missed as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin, and dear friend to many. She was the rock of our family, had a keen wit and was our biggest supporter. She will forever be with us in our hearts. The family wishes to thank the wonderful health care professionals who took excellent care of Elda and are deeply grateful to the Teresa Dellar Palliative Care Residence for their compassionate care during Elda’s last days.
A celebration of Elda’s life will be held on Friday, September 27th at Rideau Funeral Home, 4275 Boul des Sources, Dollard des Ormeaux (Quebec). Visitation will be held from 12:30pm until 2:00pm. A memorial service will take place at 2:00pm followed by a reception.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Teresa Dellar Palliative Care Residence or Chez Doris.
