It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gerry Meuris, on February 4, 2025, in Montreal, at the age of 88.

He will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his daughters Jo and Jill (and her husband Sébastien). He also leaves behind his sister Tony (and her husband Gilbert), and brother John (and his wife Ann) his nephews and nieces, as well as many other family and friends. He joins his beloved wife Janet in his passing.

The eldest of three siblings, Gerry was born in the Netherlands where he grew up during WWII, and moved to Montreal with his parents, sister and brother shortly after the war ended. After High School he studied at McGill and Loyola (now Concordia) Universities, and then St Joseph’s teacher’s college before embarking on his adventures teaching in South East Asia, and the Caribbean with CUSO.

While in Trinidad he met and married his wife, Janet. They also travelled extensively for his work, living in London for a year and then in several more Caribbean countries before Jo and Jill were born in Barbados. He moved his family back to Montreal, where he taught at Father’s of Confederation (now Terry Fox) elementary school for many years. He took his family on another adventure to Germany where he taught for DND at the elementary school on the Canadian Military base in Baden-Söllingen.

Everyone in the family would agree that those were four wonderful and memorable years, full of travel and unique opportunities and experiences. They returned to Montreal, and Gerry returned to Terry Fox where he retired from teaching. He was always extremely invested in his students, and those who were lucky enough to have him as a teacher would often stop him in the street years after his retirement to talk to him.

Gerry enjoyed photography, music, culture, meeting new people, and both making and watching films. He was very active in the St-Luke’s church community until his health made it too difficult for him to do so in later years. Generous almost to a fault he gave extensively to charity, especially in the later years of his life. Helping people was one of his driving forces, and he maintained his generousity of spirit and selflessness until the very end.

In his memory, in lieu of flowers, a donation to Development and Peace can be made.

Visitation to be held at Rideau Funeral Home & Cemetery 4275 Blvd des Sources, DDO, QC H9B 2A6. February 18, 2025 from 14h-16h00 and 18h-20h00.

Funeral Services to be held at St Luke’s Parish 106A av Anselme-Lavigne, DDO, QC H9A 1N8. February 19, 2025 at 11h00
