With profound sadness, we bid farewell to John Szollosy who passed away peacefully on September 7th, 2024. He leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and remarkable achievements that will forever be treasured by his family.
Born in 1940 in Hungary, John was the beloved son of John and Eva Szollosy. He was a cherished brother to Anna (George). John shared 61 wonderful years of marriage with his wife, Michelle. Together they raised two sons, in a home filled with love and happiness. John is survived by his wife Michelle, children David, James (Joanna), his nieces and nephews, and his grandchildren Isabel, Jane, Emma and Alex.
John's life journey started from humble beginnings, following the Hungarian revolution in 1956. This historic event changed the direction of his life, as he fled Hungary leaving his parents and sister behind at the age of 16, only to reunite with them many years later in Canada. His strength, resilience and talents set him on his path to success.
John completed his studies at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts School of Art and Design, where he earned a scholarship in Commercial Art. His talents and hard working nature led to a successful career as a creative director which ultimately led him to becoming vice president and business partner at Empire L.A. Graphics.
Beyond his professional endeavors, John had a love for life and appreciated the simple things. He was a wonderful father, mentor and protector. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, boating, and loved cars. He shared his passion for winemaking with friends, a tradition passed down from his father. He enjoyed building projects, and loved to talk about hockey as a devoted Montreal Canadiens fan.
John enjoyed his retirement years in Florida with Michelle, where they played golf together, visited botanical gardens, frequented boat shows, danced to live music, watched sunsets and gazed at the moon. They had many adventures together as they explored new things to see.
As we bid farewell, we celebrate a life well-lived and a spirit that will always remain with us. John will forever be remembered, and continue to inspire those who were touched by his remarkable life.
The family will receive condolences at Rideau Funeral Home, 4275 Des Sources, Dollard-des-Ormeaux, on Monday September 23rd as of 10 am followed by a Celebration of Life at 11 am.
In lieu of flowers, a donation made in his memeory to the Alzheimer Society of Canada would be greatly appreciated.
