SMEGELSKI, John William
October 18, 1929 - November 15, 2024
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John William Smegelski, who departed peacefully on Friday, November 15, 2024 at the venerable age of 95. Beloved husband of 61 years to his wife Martha Smegelski. Cherished father to sons Stephen Smegelski and David Smegelski, dear father-in-law to Lynne Jank, and loving grandfather to John, Daniel, and Erika Smegelski, godfather to Danya Lesiuk, as well as a dearly loved figure to many friends and family members.

Born in Montreal, John, with his wife Martha, raised their two sons in the house that they had built in 1966 in Dollard-des-Ormeaux, in which they have lived their whole lives, filling it with many family memories. John was passionate about individual sports, from his early wrestling years during which many trophies were earned, to his taking up karate in his 50s at the local YMCA and eventually earning his black belt following many competitions. John, as a career-long employee of Air Canada, was also an avid traveller. Along with Martha he held a passion for visiting new places, from their honeymoon in Barbados and Jamaica, to the annual trips that they would bring their sons on from Florida, to California, to Hawaii. He and Martha were also a couple to be reckoned with on the dance floor at the many Ukrainian dances that they would attend over the years.

The funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 27th at St. Luke’s parish in D.D.O. at 11:00 a.m., followed by the interment at Rideau Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home (514-685-3344), 4275 boul.des Sources in D.D.O. at 12:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to the Teresa Dellar Palliative Care Residence.
