Sadly, we announce that Karen passed away unexpectedly on July 26th. She was born in Halifax, where she spent the first part of her life before coming to Montreal. Karen will be deeply missed by her daughter Catherine (David), grandsons Harrison, Hayden and Ewan, step-children Glenn (Cathy), Ross, Danielle (Wayne), Pam (Karel), Lorraine, Cathy (Neil) and 13 step-grandchildren. Cherished sister to Brenda (Sal), brother Ken (Dawn), sisters-in-law Heather and Susan as well as many other family members and friends.
Karen was predeceased by her loving husband Douglas Smith, parents Bill and Rita Newman, brothers Billy, Ron, Stephen and sister Linda.
Karen had an artistic streak and was especially proud of her painting and drawing. Among her other interests were crafts, music, dancing, puzzles, gardening, watching old movies and collecting old post cards. She was an avid walker, and gave back to the community through volunteer work at Meals on Wheels as well as Lakeshore Trinity United Church.
Karen’s life was a tapestry of nurturing love, selfless service and the joy of life’s simple pleasures. She was strong willed but straight forward which, undoubtedly, helped her deal with life’s challenges. Karen was born with a caring soul and a steadfast love and loyalty to her family and friends.
Rest with the angels, dear Karen. We will listen for your whispers on the wind.
