<div itemprop="description">Leo Fernandes passed peacefully away on September 15, 2017 at the age of 84 at the Institut de Cardiologie de Montreal after a lengthy and courageous battle with heart and lung illnesses. <br>He is survived by his beloved wife Linda (Pinto) as well as his four sons Lester (Sylvie Bachand), Luan (Donna Anderson), Llewellyn, and Larry (Ellen Lerner). He is one of 10 children to parents Mary and Chick Fernandes, survived by brothers Erik, Terrence and Allen. In addition, he leaves behind seven grandchildren; Samantha, Marc-André, Rachel, Maryse, Colin, Marie-Hélène and Isabella. Leo will be remembered as a very dear uncle to many nieces and nephews and a friend to so many others. <br> <br>Leo immigrated to Montreal from Karachi, Pakistan in 1963. His wife Linda and all 4 children followed a year later where they made Montreal their new home. Leo was an educator from the beginning of his professional life serving as both a high school math teacher and vice-principal at John F. Kennedy High School in Montreal. This was followed by several years representing his colleagues as the Executive Director of the FESCT (Federation of English Speaking Catholic Teachers) association in Montreal. Leo was a gentle spirit with a generous heart and amazing wit. His inspiration to his former students continues to this day. <br>Special thanks to the attentive staff at the Montreal Heart Institute and the Maisonneuve-Rosemont hospital for their kind care of Leo over many visits across the years. Heartfelt thanks to Ron and Joyce Pinto for their presence and assistance throughout Leo’s medical challenges. The family is also very grateful to the Cambridge Residence staff for their support. <br> <br>Leo will be missed by many friends and relatives in Canada, Pakistan and abroad. Visitation will be held at Rideau Funeral Home, 4275 boul des Sources, Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Quebec (www.rideaumemorial.com) on Friday, September 22 from 2-4:30 pm and 7-9 pm. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 23 at 11:30 am at St Thomas à Becket Church, 4320 Saint-Anne St, Pierrefonds, QC. <br>In lieu of flowers, an In Memoriam donation can be made on behalf of Leo Fernandes to the Montreal Heart Institute Foundation (www.icm-mhi.org/en/foundation). <br></div>
