With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Marianne Regina Hagen (nee Koch) on Friday September 13th, 2024 at the age of eighty-nine. She joins her beloved husband Rolf C. Hagen. Loving Mother to Mark (Caroline), Tom (Teresa), Rolf Jr. and mother-in law to Valerie. Cherished and devoted Oma to Sasha and Katia (Alex); Justin, Ashley and Kaitlin; Brittany, Matthew, William and Christian.
Predeceased by her parents Mina (Von Eitzen) and Heinrich Koch and her brothers, Johann and Peter, who are survived by their wives, Helga and Christa. She will be sadly missed by her brother-in-laws Dieter (Inge) and Horst (Jutta) and by her sister-in-laws Hannelore (late Hanne), Anne (late Manfred) and Karin (late Karl-Willi). Predeceased by her sister-in-laws Lilo Hagen and Marga (Jörgen) and her brother-in-laws Walter (Gisela), Fritz (Marlena) and Uwe (Gerda). She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews.
Marianne was born in Hamburg, Germany on July 5th, 1935. She immigrated to Montreal in 1958, leaving behind her family, her friends, and what was a comfortable life in the Altona neighbourhood of Hamburg. She came to Canada after “gentle” persuasion from the charming, young entrepreneur, Rolf C. Hagen. They married on June 12th, 1959, in Rolf’s hometown of Grömitz, located on the Baltic coast. They settled in Montreal, and Marianne supported her husband as he built a leading global pet company from scratch. She gave birth to three sons over 7 years and was a dedicated and loving mother. Marianne was also an excellent cook, baker and generous homemaker and hostess.
Marianne defined her own value as a strong woman who was always a shining light, never in front, but a true partner to her husband and his company. She attended key industry events, company celebrations, and built personal relationships with key vendors and customers, which was an important part of the success of the company. To some of Rolf’s partners, it was Marianne’s worldly “big city” grace that offset his slightly brusque small town work ethic. It was not always easy for her but, she persevered. A true tigress.
As her children grew up, Marianne became a key part of the St. Paul Lutheran’s Church in Saint Laurent, organizing their successful Christmas Bazaar for decades and being part of the leadership team. She personally sponsored outings for the seniors from the Church and her extended community. At the Hagen company, she was the “Head Elf” of the annual Christmas parties, buying gifts for hundreds of children each year.
Marianne was an avid sportswoman. She loved to play tennis and swam every chance she got. Her true passion was her cross-country skiing, with her group of friends, which she finally gave up at the young age of 80! She was always on the move! She was blessed with many long-lasting friendships in Canada and in Germany, and she will be sadly missed by all who knew her and whose lives she touched.
She was a loving mother and Oma that never judged her family. She always forgave and was a shining example to her children and grandchildren. Marianne supported her family with all her heart.
We would like to thank the nurses and caregivers of the Bordeaux-Cartierville CLSC and the Societé de soins palliatifs à domicile du Grand Montréal for their excellent and compassionate care and support. Also, a special thank you to her private caregiver, Helen Bekit, whose patience, empathy and care will never be forgotten by the family.
Visitation will take place at Rideau Funeral Home, 4275 Sources Blvd, DDO on Sunday, September 22nd, 2024, from 5 pm to 9 pm. Funeral Service will take place in the Chapel at the same location on Monday, September 23rd, 2024, at 11 am. Interment will follow at Rideau Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in the memory of Marianne can be made to the Fondation Hôpital du Sacré-Coeur de Montréal.
