It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear father, Winston DaCosta Nicholls, who died on September 18, 2026, at the age of 89, after a difficult battle with Alzheimer's.

Born on July 12, 1937, in Barbados, West Indies, Winston came to Canada in 1960, where he built a wonderful life with his cherished wife, Judy, who predeceased him last year. He will be greatly missed by his children, Andrea (Michael) and David (Shelley), his beloved grandchildren, Melissa, Vivian, Vaughn, Avery and Ellis and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by all of siblings and brother and sisters in law: Maria, Cora (Euclid), Gene, Bertram (Norma).

Winston had a keen interest in history, economics and politics. A lifelong learner, he believed strongly in sharing his knowledge with others. As the patriarch of his family, he was a steadfast source of support to family and friends in all their endeavours. His commitment extended to Montréal’s Black community, where he led a number of initiatives focused on uplifting, educating and building community. A proud Barbadian, Winston remained deeply connected to his island and its culture throughout his life. He also had an enduring passion for music that spanned many genres.

We are profoundly grateful to those who cared for him with such compassion during his most trying times: Joy, Sandra, Jolly and Pamela, as well as the team on the 3rd floor at Pavillon Camille-Lefebvre in Lachine.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Alzheimer's Society of Canada would be very much appreciated.

Family and friends are invited to offer their condolences on Thursday, October 1, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., and on Friday, October 2, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., at Rideau Funeral Home (4275 Sources Blvd., Dollard-des-Ormeaux).

A funeral service will follow at the funeral home at 11:00 a.m.

For those who are unable to attend in person, you are warmly invited to join us online and watch the ceremony live using the link below: https://funeraweb.tv/diffusions/128398
