Passed away peacefully and on her own terms in Baie d’Urfe, Quebec, on Sunday, 12 November, 2017, in her 102nd year. She was predeceased by her parents, Robert Herbert Jaques and Ann Bella Shepard, and by her brothers Robert and Louis.

Betty leaves to mourn her passing her nieces, Mary (Jaques) Hall (Steve) and Margaret (Jaques)Wood (John), and nephews Robert and William Jaques; grand-nieces Neyir (Hall) Urminsky (David), Elizabeth (Jaques)Wood and grand-nephews Ben and Robert Wood ( Kristen); and great-grand-nephews Maxwell, Lloyd, Louis and Jex Urminsky and Silas Wood.

Betty was born and grew up in Toronto. She studied under Arther Lismer, and later worked with him at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, in charge of the children’s program. She also worked at the Ontario School for Girls in Whitby and Trafalgar School in Montreal. In 1945, Betty joined the department of Art Education at MacDonald College, and became head of the department. While at MacDonald, she designed and supervised construction of her own house in Baie d’Urfe. She moved with the department to McGill University in Montreal and retired in 1981 as Professor of Art Education. Many of her students maintained contact with her over the years. In her retirement, Betty maintained a busy lifestyle. In the mid 60’s she had purchased a heritage country property near Georgeville, in the eastern townships of Quebec, which she proceeded to renovate and redecorate, and which she named Applecroft. Until quite recently, she enjoyed hosting family and friends at Applecroft every summer. She also travelled broadly, always taking a sketchbook and camera and producing many water-colors of her travels upon her return.

The family is extremely grateful to the staff of The Maxwell Residence in Baie d’Urfe, the ladies of Complete Care, and dear friends Shan Evans and Fran Olsen, for their kind ministrations in Betty’s final days.

A funeral will be held at Betty’s parish church, St. George’s in St. Anne de Bellevue, Quebec, at 10:30, Thursday, November 23rd, 2017. A private inurnment will be held next summer at the McPherson Cemetery in Georgeville.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to St. George’s Anglican Church in St. Anne de Bellevue, Christ Church Cathedral in Montreal, or Plan Canada.
