It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Barbara Miller (née Hinkson), who peacefully left us on October 8th, 2024. Born on September 4th, 1940, she was a beloved spouse, parent, grandparent, sibling, and friend.

Barbara will be dearly missed by her loving children Kirk, Joanne, and Natalie, and their spouses Melissa (Kirk), and Mark (Natalie), and her cherished grandchildren Evelyn and Madeline (Kirk & Melissa), Kailey (Joanne), and Abigail (Natalie & Mark), her siblings Diane and Peter, and a multitude of relatives and friends.

Born in Barbados in 1940, she immigrated to Canada at the age of 18. She met our father a few years later and they spent countless hours riding together on his motorcycle. She became so comfortable on the back of the bike, and trusted him so much, she would often read a book while he navigated the roadways. She supported him throughout his racing career which eventually turned into a family-owned business which they ran together for 33 years, and were married for nearly 58 years. We can’t help but wonder whether her passing twelve days later had something to do with her desire to be reunited.

Mom's thirst for knowledge was insatiable. She was a lifelong learner and prized education not just for its own sake, but for the doors it opened to understanding, opportunity, and growth. She was an avid reader, consuming countless books throughout her life. She returned to college in her mid-50s matching or outpacing the enthusiasm and zest for life of her 35-year-younger classmates. Our mother modeled and gifted us a growth mindset that has had, and continues to have, a tremendously positive impact on our lives.

As a naturally gifted and hard-working artist, Mom's life was much like the canvases, ceramics, and toll paintings that adorned her home. Her art was not just a hobby; it was her voice, her solace, and her way of sharing her soul with the world. Her art appeared at the Montreal Museum of Fine Art and the Montreal Children’s Hospital. Each brush stroke told a story, and through her art, she left us with a legacy of creativity and beauty.

She deeply loved, and was endlessly proud of, her three children and four grandchildren. The suddenness of her departure has left her family and friends reeling, grappling with a reality that she is no longer with us. We find comfort in the countless memories and legacy she leaves.

Rest in peace, Mom. Your masterpiece is complete.

She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future Proverbs 31:25

The funeral service will take place in the Spring of 2025, date to be determined. Details and information to follow.
