BRUCE R. DOWNEY, DVM, Ph.D

October 15, 1939 - April 4, 2018

Bruce grew up on a small mixed farm near Pakenham, ON. After obtaining a DVM from Ontario Veterinary College, he worked in mixed practice and later in an artificial insemination unit in the Niagara Peninsula. He then spent eight years in the animal health division of Ayerst, Mckenna, & Harrison pharmaceutical company in Montreal and Chazy, NY. While there he collaborated with researchers at Macdonald College of McGill, which led to an invitation to join the staff of the Animal Science Department. He spent over 30 years at Mac, earning a Ph.D (Reproductive Physiology) from McGill, attaining full professorship, and serving as Department Chair for two terms. He was involved in projects involving calves produced via embryo transfer and cloning in goats as well as basic research, publishing numerous scientific articles in the field of reproduction. He enjoyed international projects in China, Egypt, Jordan, Hungary, and Zimbabwe, and completed his career as Director of McGill’s Belairs Research Institute in Barbados. Bruce was an avid golfer and in recent years took up curling to replace his many years playing ice hockey, mainly on McGill staff teams. He was a former warden and a longtime member of the choir at St. George’s Anglican Church and a member of the Baie d’Urfe Curling Club and Braeside Golf course in Senneville. He will be greatly missed by Peggy, his wife of 55 years; sons Steve (Joanne), Mike (Laura), and Tom (Jenne); and grandchildren Melissa, Andrea, Thomas, Jenna, Katelyn, James, Joel, and Marla. Visitation at Rideau Funeral Home 4275 Sources Blvd., DDO (Tuesday, April 10, 5:30pm-9pm). Service at St George’s Anglican Church, 19 Perreault, Ste. Anne-de-Bellevue (Wednesday, April 11, 3 pm).
