Baird, Shirley Anne (nee Conrad)

1932- 2014

It is with great sadness that we announce that Shirley Anne Baird (nee Conrad) passed away suddenly on her last day of vacation in Cuba on March 8, 2014, in her 82nd year. She was pre-deceased by her parents, Agnes Elizabeth James and Ralph Jones Conrad. She is survived by her husband of sixty years, Robert Lloyd Baird, her two daughters, Lori (Scott) Morgan, Liane (James) Hamilton, her son, Andrew (Stella Kikilidis), and seven grandchildren: Caroline and Arielle Morgan, Emily and Derek Hamilton, and Cameron, Alec and Adrianna Baird.

Shirley grew up in Montreal and attended West Hill High School then graduated with a Bachelor of Sciences degree from McGill University. After graduating, she did research work at McGill’s Pathological Institute and this was followed by several years at Ayerst McKenna Laboratories.

As a resident of Beaconsfield for over fifty years, Shirley worked as a volunteer at the Beaconsfield Public Library followed by many years actively participating at the annual McGill Book Fair.

Shirley was an avid reader, was endowed with an encyclopedic knowledge of books in general and had a passionate interest in current affairs. She was, in particular, an ardent follower of municipal affairs, always seeking to maintain the high standard of living enjoyed by her fellow citizens. This was manifested by a regular attendance at Beaconsfield council meetings. In addition, Shirley was a keen gardener and spent many hours at this, her favorite pastime.

Shirley’s greatest passion was for her family. She will be sadly missed by all, as well as by her many friends and associates. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory - to the Montreal Oral School for the Deaf (4670 Ste-Catherine Street West, Westmount, QC H3Z 1S5) or the Friends of the Beaconsfield Library (303 Beaconsfield Blvd., Beaconsfield, QC H9W 4A7) - would be appreciated.

Visitation will take place at Rideau Funeral Home, 4275 Boul. des Sources, Dollard-des-Ormeaux on Thursday, March 27, 2014, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. A celebration of her life will be held on Friday, March 28, 2014, 11:00 a.m., at Dorval Strathmore United Church on the corner of Brookhaven and Carson in Dorval. A reception will be held after the service in the church hall.
