It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Larry Weller on April 22, 2020 at the age of 73 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Larry was loved by so many and will be deeply missed by his family, friends, colleagues and students.

Born to immigrant parents, Larry lived a rich, full life as a native Montrealer. He was predeceased by his mother Mary and his father Boris who set the foundation for a perennial love of learning and pursuit of knowledge, his brother Sydney, his treasured cousin Larry Wexler and his dearest friend Kevin Tierney. Larry leaves to mourn his beloved wife Joan (nee Smith), his adored daughter Jessica (Cameron) and his pride and joy Max and Catie Bleakley, who got to call him their Zaida.

Larry loved being a teacher and his was a sought-after class at John Abbott College for 35 years, having built a career that was highlighted by his open-door policy and ability to connect with his students. He cherished his work and the opportunity to open the words of a poem, a short story, a song and the imaged expression of a film, to define the symbolism that was there to discover. Many, many of his students became lifelong friends.

Once retired from teaching he maintained his love of language and the narrative with a career as a lecturer. He brought the stories to life with his humour and his understanding to mutually avid lovers of literature, booked up to a year in advance to ensure he would be available to share his insights.

To know Larry was to know true kindness, hilarity, loyalty and human decency. He believed in the idea that as human beings we are the sum of the choices we make and he himself lived in this way.

Many thanks and deep gratitude to the dedicated and compassionate staff and nurses of the CLSC (Mandeep), the Nova West Island (Maxine and Julie) and the W.I.P.C.C., each and every one of them who helped Larry at the very end. A special thank you to Dr. Francois Collette, you and the others are the sum of what human decency consists of.

Arrangements to be made with Rideau Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home (D.D.O.). A memorial service to honour Larry’s life will take place at a later date when we are all able to be together.

Donations in Larry’s name may be made to Nova West Island or the West Island Palliative Care Centre.

Be at peace, Larry. You can now describe the meaning of the light and its colours across the universe to a celestial class. They’ll love you!

We will remember you, always.

L’chaim.
