Thomas Kirkpatrick
April 12, 2023
Thomas Crosby Kirkpatrick IV
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Thomas Crosby Kirkpatrick on April 12, 2023, at the Lakeshore General Hospital after a brief illness at the age of 87. He was born in Stratford, Ontario, only son of the late Dr. Thomas Crosby Kirkpatrick of New Hamburg, Ontario and his wife Marjorie Fargey Clark, pre-deceased by his sisters Nancy (Ecclestone) and Mary (Ferguson), first married to Laura Olmstead in 1959, beloved father of the late Marjorie (Steve Hardy), Thomas Crosby, Kathleen (Ben Lamarche) and Shona (Dino Del Grosso. He was blessed with grandsons Tom (Krista), Kevin, Michael, Donato, and Chase, and granddaughters Mackenzie, Madison, and Toni. Divorced in 1986, he he married Marian Siminski in 2007, with whom he spent the last 20 years of his life.
As a child living in New Hamburg in a home that later became the Waterlot restaurant, Tom experienced life as the son of a country doctor and his nurse wife with his dad’s general practice in the family home for over four decades.
During his days in public school, Tom began studies in violin, winning First Prize 3 years in a row for Violin Solo at the Stratford Music Festival. He attended the Kitchener Waterloo Collegiate Vocational School, Ridley College in Ste. Catharine’s where he was active on the football team, and then after graduating from Ridley, went on to study Commerce at McGill in Montreal.
Tom loved the outdoors, skiing with his parents from age 3 and later with his own family. Summers were spent on the family island of Inneskirk on Lake Muskoka where Tom later built his own family summer home there in the 70’s. He loved to go for walks in the woods, especially in the McGill Arboretum in Ste-Anne/Senneville, close to his home.
Although he did not follow in his father’s footsteps in the field of medicine, Tom did embrace his dad’s love of boating, often spending time sanding his dad’s boat “Spray”. His first major experience on the high seas came when he left to work with his Uncle on a ship whose crew was mainly from Ile Verte, Quebec, getting his first taste of colloquial French. He later went on to a shipping career first with Munro Jorgenssen Shipping Mtl and Crosby & Co. Nfld, where he took on many administrative duties. In 1968 the section under his management was absorbed by Seven Seas Shipping of New York where his duties in operation and management continued until 1979. From 1979 to 1982, he was employed by Papachristidis Maritime Mtl. When this company ceased its North American operations, Tom became a marine consultant and representative of Callida Shipping in New York until 1991 when he retired from shipping.
Tom owned several boats of his own over the years, including an Alberg 22 and his treasured “Celeste” sailboat.
In 2008, Tom and Marian began their boating adventures on Maid Marian along the Rideau and Trent canals, the seaway to Quebec City, and south to Lake Champlain and Burlington, Vermont.
As a couple, Marian embraced boating for the first time and Tom revisited his music background where they both enjoyed playing violin and piano together and performing at Celtic Concerts.
Their last boat trip was August 2022. Shortly after that time in the Fall, after a lifetime of good health, Tom developed several multiple issues and succumbed to his illness 6 months later.
A memorial of Tom’s life will be celebrated on August 26, 2023, at Briarwood Presbyterian Church, Beaconsfield, Quebec at 2 pm.
